This week was another fantastic week of fly fishing around Alphonse Island Lodge. We were fortunate to be joined by four very keen anglers: Benjamin, Hugo, Matthias and Heike. The week delivered plenty of highlights, from a recaptured giant trevally and three permit to a 21 fish morning on the bonefish flats, along with a young angler who showed everyone how it’s done.

Ben managed a stunning giant trevally of 80cm that snapped the twelve weight rod mid-battle. This fish was also a recapture, having grown 10cm in the six years it had been free. Perhaps the most interesting detail about this fish is that it was hooked just a couple of hundred metres away from where it was originally caught, despite its long period of freedom. Matthias landed a stunning permit of 35cm early in the week and later had another fantastic day on the water, landing his second permit for the week. The fish were feeding on a mudding ray and couldn’t resist the well presented Alphlexo crab. Ten year old Hugo showed everyone that age doesn’t determine one’s angling ability, landing a permit of his own on his very first day out on the flats of St François.

Heike made sure that the guys didn’t have all the fun, having a blast with the abundant bonefish and enjoying a fantastic day of bonefishing where she landed 21 bonefish in a single morning. Matthias also added a good brace of bonefish to his tally.
Ben had a fantastic week with the moustache triggerfish, landing a feisty fish of 50cm and a further three, including a few that had Tom all masked up to retrieve them from their coral homes. Hugo also managed the only yellowmargin triggerfish of the week, landing a feisty fish tailing hard on Topsticks Finger.
Hugo’s first day on the water also produced a 40cm batfish, capping off a memorable start to his trip.

A big thank you to Ben, Hugo, Matthias and Heike for a wonderful week on the flats. That’s all for this week’s catch report. Catch you next week!
