Tarpon on Fly

Tarpon are arguably the most acrobatic inshore fish to target on fly. The mix of aggressive takes and long runs topped off by acrobatic jumps make it a staple of saltwater inshore fishing and one of the most sought after gamefish in the world. They will put anglers’ skills and tackle to the test.

Tips & Tricks

The Search

Tarpon can be targeted in a variety of habitats making it a truly special fish to fish for, From backcountry lagoons, mangroves and estuaries to sight fishing over sand and turtle grass flats on the ocean side of the bay. Anglers and guides will scan the horizon for rolling fish and pods of migratory fish entering the bay during their annual visit

Tides

Incoming tide brings the migratory fish through reef passes into the bay and gives anglers and guides the best opportunity to stumble upon a newly arrived pod of fish. Strong outgoing tides are the best to target the juveniles as they concentrate in canals, mouths and points to feed on crustaceans and fish flushed out by the current.

Tackle

The most commonly used setups when targeting tarpon include 9 and 10 weight rods for the lagoon, mangrove and backwater fish. The migratory fish which are significantly larger require 10 or 11 weight rods with slightly heavier leaders and backing. All matched with good quality large arbour saltwater reels, with smooth drags and a minimum of 300yrds of backing.

Minnow imitations are a must have for these fish, a large percentage of their diet is composed of sardines and juvenile mullet. Natural colours with contrasting backs are essential like chartreuse/white, tan/white and grey/white; don’t forget the iconic black and purple!

Tarpon Toad

Tarpon Toad

As the name suggests this legendary fly is tailor-made for tarpon and has helped anglers fool these fish for years. Both marabou and bunny variations are just as effective and will mimic a wide array of forage. Black, purple, chartreuse and tan are great colours for this fly.

Cockroach

Cockroach

This classic fly pattern is one of the first ever designed flies for tarpon. Depending on the colour variation it is known by different names. It is a great fly to mimic shrimp and baitfish patterns. Natural colours like brown and tan work wonders but also mix in the iconic black death for stained water or cloudy days.
