Snook on Fly

Arguably one of the best snook fisheries in the world, Ascension Bay offers good numbers as well as trophy specimens, targeted in the backwaters, lagoons, mangroves and on the flats. This species is addictive to target and keeps anglers coming back annually.

Tips & Tricks

The Search

Snook fishing is more like a hunt. Guides will pole the mangrove shorelines and mangrove islands (“mogotes”) of the Ascension Bay and Boca Paila backcountry in search of snook that will be slowly cruising or laid up on the edge of the mangroves, where they wait for unsuspecting bait to swim by. These fish will test your fish spotting skills like no other.

Tides

Moving water moves bait around and snook take advantage of it as bait gets flushed. Low tide is the best to fish for snook as it forces them further out of the mangroves, giving anglers a better opportunity to present the fly.

Tackle

The most commonly used setups when targeting Snook include 9 and 10 weight rods, All matched with good quality large arbour saltwater reels, with smooth drags and a minimum of 300yrds of backing.

Natural SF/EP Baitfish Patterns

Minnow imitations are a must have for these fish, a large percentage of their diet is composed of sardines and juvenile mullet. Natural colours with contrasting backs are essential like chartreuse/white, tan/white and grey/white; don’t forget the iconic black and purple!

Baitfish and shrimp patterns are very effective as they provide a lively action. The use of hackle and or Zonker both provide very natural movements that Snook detect easily with their lateral lines. Natural and dark colours will serve different water conditions.

Snook Sliders

Snook Sliders

This baitfish imitation with a deer hair head that pushes water and helps the snook locate the fly even in murky or stained water. Dark colours as well as natural/baitfish imitations are preferred.
