Arguably the best saltwater species to target on fly, the abundance in Ascension Bay makes it the perfect destination for new and experience anglers alike. Targeting them in multiple habitats, in groups or single tailing fish. Ever present, providing endless happy days for multiple anglers and contributing to many a grand slam.
Tips & Tricks
The Search
Tailing bonefish in the mangroves, cruising fish on the shorelines of both the lagoon and in the surf, there are multiple options when targeting them in Ascension Bay. Successfully targeted on foot in front of the lodge and throughout the lagoons, or off a skiff, quick sessions or entire days can be spent with a rod bent.
Tides
Among many of the Ascension Bay species bonefish can be targeted throughout the tidal cycle, offering endless opportunities during a day’s fishing.
Tackle
The most commonly used setups when targeting bonefish include 8 and 9 weight rods and matching reels with smooth drags. Reels are spooled with 300 yards of 50lb backing and a tropical floating fly line to match.
Bonefish Flies
Clousers
Gotcha’s, Golden Knights, Christmas Island special to name a few, these flies in a range of variations and weights are all you need to target the bonefish of Ascension Bay. Sizes range from size 6 to 2.
Shrimps
Shrimp flies have a realistic look, often mimicking natural bait the fish might be feeding on. Common patterns include spawning shrimps, Mantis shrimps among many other variations over the years. Varied sizes, colours and weights are essential due to the diverse range of habitats when fishing Ascension Bay.
Alphlexo Crabs
The fly that changed the permit game in the Seychelles, although not used as popularly in the Mexico just yet, Vitto and the team have had phenomenal success when used, and without a doubt an option to have in every visitor’s box. Common sizes and colour patterns include size 2 and 6 in Tan, Clear and Snakeskin.
