Atlantic Permit on Fly
Targeting Atlantic Permit on fly is not for the faint-hearted, they are fickle, cunning and are known to drive fly anglers crazy. Targeted by new and experienced anglers alike it is on the top of many a saltwater fly anglers list. A combination of the right place at the right time, a good guide, a good presentation and a little bit luck might just offer you the catch of a lifetime.
Tips & Tricks
The Search
Ascension Bay offers a diverse array habitats to target permit. From tailing fish in the shallow back waters of the lagoon, to tailing fish in the surf zone on the ocean side, free swimming fish moving in and out of the lagoons and on the ocean side, and the iconic floating crab eaters during the season. The options are endless, tricking them into eating is key.
Tides
Strong incoming tides move fish into the flats, where they will tail in search of displaced crustaceans. Outgoing tides will funnel food in deeper channels and passes providing opportunities at cruising and shoaling fish.
Tackle
The most commonly used setups when targeting permit are 9 weight rods and matching reels with smooth drags. Reels are spooled with 300 yards of 50lb backing and a tropical floating fly line to match.

Strong Arm Crabs
One of the original patterns used and developed in Ascension Bay, perfectly mimics free swimming crabs. Varied sizes, colours and weights are essential due to the diverse range of habitats when fishing Ascension Bay. Particularly successful for free swimming fish in open water and an important fly to have in every visitor’s box.
Shrimps
Shrimp flies have a realistic look, often mimicking natural bait the fish might be feeding on. Common patterns include spawning shrimps, Mantis shrimps among many other variations over the years. Varied sizes, colours and weights are essential due to the diverse range of habitats when fishing Ascension Bay.
Alphlexo Crabs
The fly that changed the permit game in the Seychelles, although not used as popularly in the Mexico just yet, Vitto and the team have had phenomenal success when used, and without a doubt an option to have in every visitor’s box. Common sizes and colour patterns include size 2 and 6 in Tan, Clear and Snakeskin.
